Bernard de Nonancourt. 70 Years of innovation in the world of champagne

After the end of World War II, Bernard de Nonancourt took the reins of Maison Laurent-Perrier and, with a revolutionary vision, redefined the house’s style based on three immutable pillars: freshness, purity, and elegance. At that time, the great champagne houses tended to focus on Pinot Noir, utilizing barrels and a high sugar content, which resulted in a champagne ideal for pairing with desserts. However, Bernard de Nonancourt marked a turning point in the industry. His innovative approach led him to reduce the amount of sugar, prioritize the use of Chardonnay to preserve freshness, and opt for stainless steel vats, ensuring that the primary aromas of the fruit were not altered. For him, champagne was a wine versatile enough to be enjoyed on any occasion.

In the 1950s, the first prestige Cuvées from the great houses began to emerge, characterized by the exclusive use of a single vintage. Bernard de Nonancourt, always at the forefront, created the Grand Siècle in 1959, a Cuvée that challenged convention. This champagne combined the complexity of an aged wine with the freshness of a young one, achieving exceptional harmony. The blend was made by selecting three exceptional vintages, chosen from 11 of the 17 exclusive Grands Crus of Champagne, in which Chardonnay predominated, accompanied by Pinot Noir. His goal was audacious: to recreate what he called “the perfect vintage,” a masterpiece that nature alone could never provide.

In 1968, Bernard once again surprised the champagne world with the creation of the first macerated Rosé Cuvée: the Cuvée Rosé. This innovation was followed in 1981 by Ultra Brut, a pioneering champagne in the no-added-sugar wine category. Years later, in 1987, he introduced Alexandra Rosé Millésimé, a jewel in the rosé range.

Bernard de Nonancourt’s legacy not only transformed Laurent-Perrier into a leading global brand but also set a new standard in the champagne industry. Under his leadership, a small champagne house became a global benchmark, with a range of unique champagnes that endure to this day. After his passing in 2010, the house continues to face new challenges, always faithful to the innovative spirit of its founder.

Today, Lucie Pereyre de Nonancourt, Grand Siècle brand ambassador and fourth generation of the Laurent-Perrier family, proudly carries on her grandfather’s legacy. Through her leadership, the vibrant imprint Bernard left on the Maison continues to shine, ensuring that his pioneering spirit will endure forever.
